Established in 1952, Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences (BHIMS), was established under the umbrella of The Bombay Hospital Trust. The Bombay Hospital Trust was constituted on 06th September 1949, as a Public Charitable Trust registered under the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950.

The main purpose of setting up a hospital by the Chairman, Shri Rameshewardas Birla, the doyen of the Birla Family , a leading industrialist in India was – in his words : “The rich can get medical care anywhere because they can afford it, the poor obviously cannot pay for it. Therefore, it should be the endeavor of the Bombay Hospital to render the same level of service to the poor that the rich could get in a good hospital “.
