How to Study NCERT for NEET: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Published on : 17 Jun 2026 Views: 2013

Starting NEET preparation can seem daunting to many. Each year, there are lakhs of students competing for limited seats in medical colleges. Where should they start from? Which books should they focus on? If you are looking for an answer to these questions, ask NEET toppers, teachers, and medical mentors. They all agree on one thing – Start with NCERT.

NCERT should be the first step in your NEET preparation. A good understanding of NCERT books can help you to score well in not only Biology and Chemistry, but also in Physics.

Based on the feedback we receive from students on our MBBS Admission Consulting Platform, we believe that the biggest mistake that students aiming for NEET make is that they buy a large number of books and do not focus enough on NCERT. The reality of the situation is that a focused and dedicated study of NCERT books will help you to build a good base and increase your chances of success in NEET.

If you are a beginner/first timer to NEET exam preparation, this guide will help you to understand how you can maximize your NEET score by strategically studying NCERT.

Why Is NCERT Critical for NEET?

Before we discuss how to study NCERT, we should answer the question: why is NCERT important in the first place?

Most of the questions in NEET are either directly or indirectly from NCERT books. Based on the analysis done on previous years question papers, it is clear that the National Testing Agency focuses on the NCERT syllabus while preparing the NEET question papers, especially the Biology and Chemistry sections.

Among many advantages, NCERT provides:

  • Conceptual clarity
  • Standardized content
  • Relevant information for the exam
  • Simple and clear language
  • No need to waste time with other resources

If you work with an MBBS Advisor, you'll find that you will be advised to go through NCERT multiple times before starting other reference books.

Know the NEET Syllabus First

Many beginners jump right into studying without knowing the syllabus, which is an unpardonable error.

Take the time to go through the latest NEET syllabus. You can find it online.

Once you have the syllabus, break it down into sections.
You can group the sections into the subjects from classes 11 and 12.
Make a note of the sections you have already studied and mark the sections that are new to you.

With this you will be able to plan out sections to study in preparation.

Step 1: Grab NCERT

The following books are required for NEET prep.
NCERT Books for NEET Physics, Chemistry, Biology Class 11 and 12

Don't buy a ton of books; quantity is a common error.
NCERT comes first for a reason.

Step 2: Have a Structure

To be consistent you need to have a structure.
You should break your study down into daily goals, weekly goals and monthly goals.

Daily
Study a Biology topic
Study a Chemistry topic
Solve Physics questions

Weekly
Complete a Chapter
Take a Test
Revise

Monthly
Unit complete
Assess how you are doing
Strengthen weak points

Step 3: First Pass NCERT

There is a common error that people will study NCERT to memorize.
You should first focus on understanding.

Ask yourself the following:
What is the overarching concept?
Why is the connection significant?
What is the relationship to previous concepts?

The first pass is a complete read through.

Step 4: Highlight Important Information

During your second reading:
Use colored pens to mark:

  • Definitions
  • Formulas
  • Examples
  • Scientific names
  • Exceptions
  • Important statements

This changes NCERT into a revision tool tailored to you.
Most MBBS Advisor experts focus on reading with purpose instead of active highlighting.

Step 5: Make Short Notes

During revision, short notes are lifesavers.

Your notes should include:

  • Key concepts
  • Flowcharts
  • Mnemonics
  • Lists of formulas
  • Diagrams
  • Lists of important facts

Do not rewrite the chapter in full.
The goal is a quick revision.

Step 6: Master NCERT Biology

Biology covers 360 of the marks in NEET.
Hence, it must be mastered.

Read Every Line
A lot of the Biology questions are asked in NCERT wordings.

Memorize Scientific Names
Focus on:

  • The Kingdom classifications
  • Examples of Plants
  • Examples of Animals

Study Tables Carefully
Since tables often are questions that are asked, study them closely.

Practice Diagrams
All important diagrams must be practiced.

All the students MBBS Advisor has helped with high Biology scores say that revising NCERT Biology multiple times is a must.

Step 7: Study NCERT Chemistry Smartly

Chemistry has:
Physical Chemistry – Requires application of formulas and numericals
Organic Chemistry – Focus on mechanisms, named reactions, exceptions
Inorganic Chemistry – Requires line-by-line NCERT reading and revision

Studying NCERT is a must for Inorganic Chemistry.

Step 8: Use NCERT Wisely for Physics

Physics demands understanding concepts and lots of practice.

NCERT helps with:
Understanding theories
Learning derivations
Creating a solid foundation

Focus on:
Units and Dimensions
Mechanics
Thermodynamics
Modern Physics
Current Electricity

Practice without fail.

Step 9: Solve NCERT-Based MCQs

Just reading will not be enough.

After finishing each chapter, solve:

  • NCERT-based inquiries
  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Assertion-reason type questions

Initial Goal: 30–50 questions
Subsequent Goal: 50–100 questions

Be mindful of the mistakes.

Step 10: Regularly Update

Those who regularly update their notes achieve better results than those who don’t.

First update: 24 hours after learning
Second update: 3 days after learning
Third update: 7 days after learning
Fourth update: 14 days after learning
Fifth update: 1 day before the exam

This technique also greatly improves memory.

Step 11: Keep an Error Journal

Each error should be taken as an opportunity for improvement.

The error journal should include:

  • Questions answered incorrectly
  • Concepts that are weak
  • Errors made in calculations/formulae
  • Careless mistakes

This journal should be reviewed regularly. Many students who work with MBBS Advisors say their greatest score advancements came as a result of learning from their mistakes.

Step 12: Solve Past NEET Papers

Past papers help analyze trends and are helpful for the following reasons:

  • Understanding how questions are structured
  • Recognizing concepts that are asked multiple times
  • Building confidence
  • Building speed

At a minimum, complete the last 10 years of NEET papers.
Check your answers against the NCERT.

Step 13: Do Practice Exams

Practice exams are meant to help students learn how to work under exam conditions.

Start with: 1 exam per week
Then: 2 exams per week
Final stage: 3 exams per week

For each exam, you should analyze mistakes instead of only results.

Step 14: Learn Expected Rank and Score

This can be a huge motivator, and the NEET Rank Predictor allows students to see what rank they will likely achieve based on their score.
Be responsible when using the tool. Focus on performance more than rank.

Step 15: Avoid These Rookie Errors

  • Buying Too Many Books
  • Neglecting Updates
  • Thinking Randomly
  • Disregarding Application
  • Constantly Measuring Yourself

Focus. It’s everything.

Sample Study Routine

Morning: Biology NCERT Study
Afternoon: Chemistry theory + MCQs
Evening: Physics theory + Practice
Night: Revise + Update Error Notebook

Importance of Authentic Information

Informed and updated student = Successful Aspirant.

Last 90 Days of NCERT

Days 1–30: Finish NCERT + Take Notes
Days 31–60: MCQs + Learn Notes + Solve Previous Years
Days 61–90: Mocks + Error Notebook + NCERT Last Revision

Conclusion

This method of studying NCERTs for NEET does not require above average intelligence, and is more focused on having the right tools and the right mindset to implement them.

You must revise repeatedly, learn from mistakes, and take mock tests seriously. Most importantly, have faith in this approach.

So many aspiring doctors have achieved NEET success with NCERT alone, and with discipline, you can do the same.

Mastering every page of NCERT brings you closer to your dream of becoming a doctor.
