MD Physiology Course: Fees, Duration, Eligibility, Cutoff & Admission

MD Physiology Course: Fees, Duration, Eligibility, Cutoff & Admission

Ask a doctor why a patient feels faint after standing up, and the answer begins with physiology. The same is true of breathing during exercise, the effect of hormones on blood sugar, or the way a nerve makes a muscle move. MD Physiology is for MBBS graduates who want to study those mechanisms in depth—and teach or investigate them.

Most residents spend their time in a medical college department. They teach MBBS students, conduct practical sessions, study how body systems work, and complete research. There may be applied work with clinical departments, but this is not a residency built around running a patient ward.

Admission depends on where the seat is offered. Most MD seats use NEET-PG followed by counselling. Institutes of National Importance that participate in INI-CET use that separate entrance and allotment route. Students need to check the current seat list before deciding which examination and counselling process applies.

Seat availability and competition differ by institution. A previous year’s closing rank may be useful, but only when it refers to the same course, category, quota, and counselling round.

What is MD Physiology?

Physiology is the study of how a living body functions. MD Physiology takes that broad idea into considerable detail: how the heart responds to exertion, how the kidneys regulate fluid, how nerve signals travel, and how different systems keep the body working together.

The degree trains a doctor to explain these processes, measure some of them, and ask research questions about them. A resident might lead a respiratory practical for MBBS students, analyse data from a study, or discuss the physiological basis of a clinical finding with colleagues.

That distinction matters for career planning. MD Physiology is primarily an academic and research-oriented specialty. It can lead to teaching, laboratory and applied physiology work, and research roles. It is not the same training path as a clinical MD intended for specialist consultations or ward-based patient care.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) curriculum for MD Physiology includes teaching skills and supervised research. Graduates may later focus on areas such as neurophysiology, cardiovascular physiology, exercise physiology, sleep research, or medical education, depending on the opportunities and qualifications required for each role.

MD Physiology Duration: What Happens Each Year?

The course generally runs for three years. The exact timetable belongs to the institution, but the change in a resident’s work is easy to understand: first learn the methods, then use them with greater independence, and finally teach and defend your own work confidently.

Year 1: From student to teacher

Residents return to familiar MBBS topics at a much deeper level. They study body systems, learn the department’s equipment and practical methods, attend seminars, and begin teaching under supervision.

This is often the first surprise of the course. Knowing a concept is one thing; explaining it to a room of students who all have slightly different questions is another.

Year 2: Develop a research question

Teaching responsibility generally grows. Residents may conduct tutorials, demonstrate practicals, help assess students, and discuss how physiological ideas apply to clinical problems.

Research also becomes a regular part of the week. The resident develops a study question, works through methods and approvals, collects data, and learns to recognise results that do not support the original assumption.

Year 3: Finish the work and defend the reasoning

Senior residents usually take a larger role in planning teaching, presenting seminars, interpreting practical results, and completing the thesis. They prepare for final examinations that assess understanding as well as the ability to apply it.

The NMC curriculum calls for a supervised postgraduate research project and participation in further research activity. What that looks like day to day depends heavily on the department’s faculty and facilities.

Duration note: Verify the current posting plan, thesis requirements, assessments, and completion rules with the institution.

MD Physiology Eligibility Criteria

For the usual NEET-PG route, the main requirements concern the MBBS qualification, internship, and medical registration. INI-CET applicants must read that examination’s separate prospectus.

  1. Base degree: Candidates generally need an MBBS degree or accepted provisional MBBS pass certificate. Applicants who obtained their primary medical qualification outside India should check the additional rules that apply to them.
  2. Internship: The compulsory rotatory internship must be completed by the cut-off date announced for the relevant admission session.
  3. Registration: Candidates must hold the permanent or provisional medical registration accepted under the applicable examination rules.
  4. Entrance examination: Most applicants take NEET-PG. For an MD Physiology seat offered through an institute’s INI-CET process, the applicant must follow that route instead.
  5. Qualifying and seat-specific requirements: Meeting the examination standard is only part of eligibility. Category documents, institutional rules, and any applicable quota conditions also need to be satisfied.

NBEMS, which conducts NEET-PG, sets out the MBBS, registration, and internship conditions for that examination.

Eligibility note: Check the current NBEMS bulletin or INI-CET prospectus, as applicable, and the relevant counselling rules. Cut-off dates and required documents can change.

MD Physiology Admission Process

  1. Finish MBBS and internship. Keep the degree or provisional certificate, internship record, registration proof, and other required documents ready.
  2. Take the applicable entrance examination. This is generally NEET-PG for seats offered through MCC or state PG counselling. Check INI-CET separately if your preferred institute uses it.
  3. Read the result carefully. Note the score or rank, qualifying status, and any instructions about participating in allotment.
  4. Register for the correct counselling route. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) handles specified national PG seat categories, including All India Quota seats; state authorities conduct their own PG counselling. INI-CET seats follow the participating institutes’ separate process.
  5. Fill choices in your real order of preference. MD Physiology may appear in government, state government, private, or deemed university medical colleges, depending on the current matrix. Read the course name and seat category closely before selecting one.
  6. Check the allotment and its conditions. Understand the rules for accepting, upgrading, or participating in later rounds. Do not assume that every counselling system handles these choices identically.
  7. Report and complete admission. The college verifies documents and collects applicable charges. Read the stipend, hostel, bond, and refund terms before making payment.

Admission note: Use the current seat matrix, schedule, and prospectus for the exact counselling route. An older process guide may miss a changed deadline or condition.

MD Physiology Fees

There is no single MD Physiology fee across India. A student should compare the amount payable over the entire course, the stipend offered during training, and any service obligation attached to the seat.

Institution or seat type

Typical fee pattern

Question to ask

Government College

Tuition is often comparatively lower

What are the hostel, deposit, stipend, and bond terms?

State Government College

Charges depend on state and institution rules

Which fee applies to my seat category?

Private College

Tuition is generally higher and varies by college

What is the approved annual fee and refund policy?

Deemed University

The institution publishes its own applicable schedule

What is the full cost, including hostel and deposits?

Management Quota

A distinct approved fee may apply where this category exists

Is this seat in the official matrix, and what fee is authorised?

A fee letter may separate tuition, university or affiliation charges, examination fees, library or laboratory fees, hostel and mess costs, and a security deposit. Ask which charges recur each year and whether a deposit is refundable. Also check whether the quoted stipend has any conditions attached.

Fee note: The table describes patterns, not actual prices. Verify the approved fee schedule, stipend, bond, and refund rules through the current college and counselling documents before paying.

MD Physiology Cutoff: Which Cutoff Do You Mean?

A student may say, “I cleared the cutoff,” while a parent hears, “We’ll get a seat.” Those are different statements.

The qualifying cutoff determines whether a candidate meets the entrance examination’s applicable standard. A college-wise closing rank describes the last candidate allotted a particular seat. That closing result may differ by category, quota, and counselling round.

Several things move it:

  1. Seat count: A change in available MD Physiology seats affects the choices candidates can make.
  2. College reputation: Teaching quality, faculty, research support, and location can influence demand.
  3. Government or private status: Fees and stipend terms may change how applicants rank colleges.
  4. Category: The relevant reservation category must match the candidate’s circumstances.
  5. Quota: All India, state, and other seat pools are assessed separately.
  6. Round: Upgrades and vacancies can change the last allotted rank.
  7. Competition: Candidate preferences are different each year.

Cutoff note: Check the current qualifying notice and official allotment results for the relevant examination and counselling route. A previous closing rank is a reference, not an admission promise.

What Rank or Score Is Needed for MD Physiology?

There is no honest single-number answer. A rank that led to a seat in one category or college may tell another applicant very little.

Start with the current seat matrix. Identify the seats for which you are eligible, then examine official previous allotments for the same course, college, category, quota, and round. Keep NEET-PG and INI-CET results separate; their ranks and allotment processes should not be compared as though they were one list.

Make a broad preference list. It should include colleges you strongly prefer and alternatives you have actually researched, in the order you would want to join them. Look at fees and teaching quality before treating a seat as an acceptable backup.

Rank note: Use current official seat and allotment records to assess your options. Historical results cannot predict your individual allotment.

MD Physiology Syllabus

The formal syllabus is detailed, but its core questions are familiar: what does each body system do, how is its function measured, and what changes when the body is placed under different demands? The NMC curriculum also gives substantial attention to teaching and research.

Cell, nerve, and muscle physiology

Residents study cell membranes, signalling, nerve conduction, muscle contraction, reflexes, and neuromuscular function. Practical work may involve recording or interpreting physiological responses.

Cardiovascular and respiratory physiology

This includes heart and circulation, blood-pressure regulation, ventilation, gas exchange, and the body’s response to exercise. The value lies in explaining why a measurement changes, not merely memorising its normal value.

Kidney, fluids, and acid–base balance

Residents examine how the body controls water, salts, and acidity. These mechanisms help explain many clinical findings, even though MD Physiology itself remains a distinct academic specialty.

Endocrine and reproductive physiology

Hormonal control, metabolism, reproduction, and changes across life stages are studied in greater depth. Feedback systems are a central idea here.

Digestion, nutrition, and energy use

Topics include gastrointestinal movement, secretion, absorption, appetite, and the way the body uses nutrients.

Brain, senses, sleep, and applied physiology

Residents may study higher nervous function, vision, hearing, sleep, exercise, and adaptation to environmental conditions. The practical methods available depend on the department.

Research and medical education

Study design, ethics, statistics, thesis work, seminars, practical demonstrations, and assessment methods are part of training. A resident needs to communicate findings clearly, including their limitations.

Practical Training in MD Physiology

There is laboratory work, but a typical week can also involve preparing a tutorial, teaching a practical batch, attending a seminar, and working on research data. This blend is central to the course.

Residents may use instruments for cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, or exercise-related measurements where the department has those facilities. They learn to prepare equipment, explain a procedure, record observations accurately, and decide whether a result is trustworthy.

Teaching is practical training too. A student who gets an unexpected reading needs help understanding whether it reflects physiology, technique, or equipment. Handling that question well takes both subject knowledge and patience.

Before selecting a college, speak with current residents if possible. Ask whether the equipment is regularly used, how teaching duties are shared, and whether thesis guidance is available throughout the project. A well-supported research environment can make a substantial difference.

Career Scope After MD Physiology

  • Medical college teaching: Teach physiology and supervise practical sessions, subject to current faculty recruitment rules.
  • Research: Work on physiological mechanisms, applied questions, or collaborative medical studies in an academic or research institution.
  • Medical education: Help develop teaching material, assessment methods, or curriculum projects.
  • Applied physiology work: Contribute to suitable laboratory or multidisciplinary roles where the job requirements match the qualification.
  • Further study: Pursue a relevant PhD, fellowship, or focused programme after checking its entry criteria and the work it leads to.

If your main goal is daily specialist consultations with patients, investigate the working life of an MD Physiology graduate before choosing the seat. If you enjoy teaching and asking research questions, those are much more central to this degree.

Salary After MD Physiology

Pay depends on the employer, city, public or private sector, academic designation, experience, and type of contract. A permanent medical college position and a time-limited research appointment can differ considerably in pay and benefits.

Consider the complete role: teaching load, research support, job security, promotion rules, and opportunities to build a body of work. These factors may matter more to your long-term career than the first offer alone.

Salary note: Verify compensation and employment terms in official recruitment notices or written offers. Generic salary claims cannot establish what a particular job will pay.

MD Physiology is a clear choice when the work itself appeals to you: explaining the body’s functions, testing ideas, and helping future doctors understand the science behind care. Compare departments on the quality of their teaching, functioning laboratories, and research guidance—then examine the full financial and admission terms before accepting a seat.
